In the original Naxxramas, the Four Horsemen could drop the Corrupted Ashbringer.
The drop was an event in itself: a rare two-handed sword with an unmistakable model and strange whispers for its wielder. But the real show began if you equipped it after the raid and traveled to Scarlet Monastery.
The crusaders stopped attacking. Entire corridors parted before the player, and a scene with Renault Mograine began inside the cathedral.
The reason for that reception lay in the sword's history.
Key Events
The Death of Alexandros
Alexandros Mograine was one of the foremost paladins fighting the Scourge. In his hands, the Ashbringer became known as a weapon that quite literally reduced the undead to ash.
Defeating such an enemy in open battle would have been difficult. Balnazzar and Kel'Thuzad instead worked through Renault, one of Alexandros's sons.
Renault led his father into Stratholme. There, Mograine and High Inquisitor Fairbanks were surrounded by undead. Alexandros fought until exhaustion forced him to drop his sword.
Renault picked up the Ashbringer and struck down his father with it.
The blade changed after the murder. That was how the Corrupted Ashbringer entered the story.
The Four Horsemen
Kel'Thuzad raised Alexandros as a death knight and placed him among the Four Horsemen of Naxxramas.
For a Classic player, the story unfolded almost backward. First, you met the dead Mograine as a raid boss and might claim his sword. Only then did the item lead you to the place where the man who had once killed him with that very blade still lived.
The Corrupted Ashbringer made the world react to it. Wearing it changed how the Scarlet Crusade and the Argent Dawn treated the player, and the blade occasionally whispered to its wielder.
A rare drop effectively became a portable piece of the story.
The Journey to Scarlet Monastery
The most famous part began in the cathedral.
Renault welcomed the wielder of the Ashbringer, but the spirit of Alexandros soon appeared. The father killed his son for the betrayal, after which the scene continued with Fairbanks and the history of the sword.
By then, Scarlet Monastery was an old low-level dungeon for most players. Naxxramas suddenly gave them a reason to return at level 60 and see the familiar cathedral in an entirely different light.
The Ashbringer's story later gained new chapters, while the original item is no longer obtainable in retail WoW. In Classic, that version still exists as a piece of its era.
Why Players Remember It
Today, important story items often lead directly to cinematics, dialogue, or dedicated scenarios. In Vanilla WoW, a story could simply sit in your inventory without advertising itself at all.
You could obtain the Corrupted Ashbringer, inspect its stats, and leave it at that.
Or you could carry it halfway across the world into a long-forgotten dungeon and discover a scene that had never been there before.
That is probably why players who never saw the sword drop still remember it. Its stats alone did not make it a legend. The world recognized what you were holding.
