When the patch that introduced Ahn'Qiraj arrived in January 2006, the portal to the new raid did not simply appear in Silithus.
The gates were closed.
Every realm had to open them for itself. The Horde and Alliance gathered war supplies while a handful of the most determined players rebuilt the Scepter of the Shifting Sands.
The reason the scepter had to be reassembled began a thousand years before the events of WoW.
Key Events
Fandral Shatters the Key
During the first War of the Shifting Sands, the night elves and dragons managed to seal the qiraji behind the Scarab Wall.
Anachronos created the Scarab Gong and the Scepter of the Shifting Sands. Together, they could reopen the wall if the threat ever returned.
The scepter was entrusted to Fandral Staghelm.
The qiraji had killed his son Valstann during the war. Still broken by that loss, Fandral smashed the scepter in fury before Anachronos.
Its four pieces passed into the keeping of dragons. Anachronos retained one shard; Vaelastrasz, Eranikus, and Azuregos received the others.
Centuries later, Classic players had to find all three of them.
A Quest Chain for a Guild, Not One Player
One character accepted the quests, but in practice an entire guild built the Scepter.
The first step was earning the trust of the Brood of Nozdormu. Players farmed Silithid Carapace Fragments across Silithus. The scepter-bearer could appoint deputies, allowing them to collect fragments on the bearer's behalf.
The chain then split into paths tied to three dragonflights.
The Red Scepter Shard led into Blackwing Lair and required Nefarian to be defeated within five hours of speaking with Vaelastrasz. Other shards sent the player through Azshara, Sunken Temple, Moonglade, raids, world bosses, and a collection of distinctly unusual errands.
One of those detours was an entire culinary affair involving chimaeroks.
For a legendary key to an ancient fortress, the chain could feel very much like Vanilla WoW.
While Guilds Chased Shards, the Realm Hauled Cloth
At the same time, the Ahn'Qiraj War Effort was underway.
Players from both factions turned in metal, leather, herbs, bandages, food, and other resources. The counters were shared across the entire realm. After the collection was complete, the supplies still took several days to reach Silithus.
Only when both preparations converged could the bearer of the completed scepter strike the Scarab Gong.
The Ten Hour War
The first strike opened the gates and began a ten-hour world event.
Qiraji forces and colossi appeared across Kalimdor, the realm received a global announcement, and chaos erupted in Silithus.
Players who had completed the scepter received one final window of opportunity: during those ten hours, they could finish the last quest and obtain the Black Qiraji Battle Tank.
Then the opportunity was gone.
Why Players Remember It
The opening of Ahn'Qiraj was a rare moment when the progress of one player, a guild, and an entire realm all converged at a single point.
Some spent weeks collecting shards and running raids. Others simply handed in stacks of linen bandages or ore. Some came to Silithus only to watch the gates open.
All of them participated in the same event, even though their tasks were completely different.
Today, Ahn'Qiraj is open by default, and the old chain was removed from retail long ago. The Scepter of the Shifting Sands therefore remains largely a memory of how Vanilla WoW itself once worked.
Back then, a new raid could begin with a question: “Is our realm even ready to open it?”
